The Endometriosis Multidisciplinary Team
(CEMIG MDT)

Meet the specialists behind your care

At CEMIG, we believe that world-class endometriosis care can only be delivered by a world-class team. Every member of our multidisciplinary team has been personally selected by Mr Shaheen Khazali for being the best — or one of the very best — in their specialty. Together, they embody the ethos and philosophy of CEMIG: collaboration, precision, and patient-centred care.

Endometriosis often affects more than one organ, which is why our approach goes beyond gynaecology alone. Our core team includes colorectal, urology, thoracic and pain specialists, alongside dedicated nurses and allied experts. We share a single mission: to provide women with safe, effective surgery and holistic support, always delivered with compassion and respect.

This is not just a collection of names — it is a carefully built team that works side by side in theatre and clinic, ensuring that every patient benefits from the combined expertise of some of the most experienced endometriosis specialists in the UK and Europe.

Endometriosis Nurse specialist

Comprehensive treatment of endometriosis is never the work of one individual. It demands the combined expertise of specialists from different fields, working side by side with a shared purpose. In medical language, this is called a multidisciplinary team (MDT) — but in simple terms, it means bringing together experts who collaborate towards a single goal: the best outcome for every patient.

At CEMIG, the patient is always at the centre of this team. Every decision, every operation, every discussion is guided by what is in the patient’s best interest.

Building such a team is no small task. It requires more than technical skill — it calls for surgeons and specialists who are deeply committed to endometriosis care, who share the same philosophy of treatment, and who trust each other to work seamlessly as one.

The diagram below illustrates the range of specialists involved in providing safe and effective care for complex endometriosis.

Endometriosis Specialist Nurse (CNS)

The endometriosis specialist nurse, also known as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), plays a vital role in patient care. Often the first point of contact, she supports patients before and after surgery, ensuring that all questions are answered and concerns addressed. The CNS coordinates the entire care pathway, organises multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, and makes sure every patient feels fully prepared for their operation.

Colorectal Surgeons (Bowel Surgeons)

Colorectal surgeons, or bowel surgeons, are essential when endometriosis affects the bowel. If the disease infiltrates the bowel wall, surgery may require removing part of the bowel (a segmental bowel resection). Mr Khazali has worked for many years with the same highly experienced colorectal team, ensuring patients benefit from seamless, expert collaboration during complex bowel endometriosis surgery.

Urologists and Kidney Transplant Surgeons

Urologists are involved when endometriosis affects the urinary tract, especially the ureters (the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder). In more advanced cases, kidney transplant surgeons may assist with highly specialised procedures such as ureteric re-implantation, where the ureter is surgically reconnected to the bladder if it has been damaged or obstructed by disease.

Thoracic Surgeons

When endometriosis involves the diaphragm or lungs, the MDT may include a thoracic surgeon. Their expertise is vital for safely managing disease that extends beyond the pelvis into the chest.

Neurosurgeons

In rare circumstances, endometriosis may affect major pelvic nerves. A neurosurgeon may be invited to join the MDT to help perform delicate surgery on specific nerve structures, ensuring the best possible outcome.

Physiotherapists

Pelvic health physiotherapists are an integral part of endometriosis care. They help patients manage pelvic floor dysfunction, pain, and recovery after surgery, supporting long-term quality of life. Physiotherapy often plays a crucial role in rehabilitation and reducing chronic pelvic pain.

Dietitians

A specialist dietitian can provide tailored advice on nutrition to help manage symptoms such as bloating, bowel disturbances, and fatigue. Dietitians work alongside the medical team to support overall health, recovery after surgery, and, when relevant, fertility optimisation.

Other Key Specialists

Endometriosis care goes far beyond surgery alone. Radiologists provide expert imaging for diagnosis and surgical planning. Pain specialists support patients with chronic pelvic pain management. Fertility experts offer guidance and treatment options for women trying to conceive. Together, these specialists make up the multidisciplinary approach to endometriosis, ensuring patients receive the highest standard of care.
